March 19, 2021 – Owner Direct recently conducted a survey with Insights West. We asked British Columbia and Alberta guests how likely, if at all, when and where they were likely to travel for pleasure purposes in the next 1-3 years. An overwhelming 74% of respondents said they would consider traveling to nearby communities in their own province for day trips within the next 12 months. 66% said they may go elsewhere in the province for an overnight trip in the same time frame.

When, if at all, are you likely to travel to the following destinations for pleasure purposes?

According to our survey results, most people are following the public health orders. 76% support the current provincial advisories against non-essential travel. 34% are not planning to travel to other countries until after they have the vaccine for COVID-19.

As Travel Restrictions Lift

Once travel restrictions are lifted, 52% of BC and AB guests said they plan on visiting friends or family as their first vacation of choice. Other respondents plan for a weekend getaway or a relaxation vacation such as a spa or resort.

Type of Vacation

The good news is that we’re not tired of those we live with. 66% of respondents said they plan to travel with their partner. 38% said they will take their whole immediate family on their next vacation.

Vacation Rental vs. Hotel

85% of Owner Direct respondents said they would choose a vacation rental over hotel, motel or resort accommodations. Some of their reasons for a vacation rental were:

A vacation rental property is likely to have a direct door to the outside (no indoor public hallways or elevators) and is less likely to have as much human traffic nearby. It has a homier feeling. It will have opening windows. I can bring my own food. Parking is generally available and free/included.

Having your own place to go to with separate rooms (or kitchen, bathroom, bedroom). Ability to choose what you want based on what different places provide. Can see what your booking through pictures. When communicating, we are talking with actual people/families instead of someone at a front desk. Support local people in renting their places.

I love to have access to a kitchen and laundry! A private hot tub is also great! Vacation rentals usually have a living room or kitchen space for our family to hang out together, as opposed to only beds.

As guests look towards the summer holidays, OwnerDirect.com has seen a 16% increase in vacation rental booking requests over the last month. Have you made your travel plans yet or are you waiting until the travel restrictions lift?
