Tech Hacks to Save Money and Time on Your Adventures

Embarking on an adventure costs money and time, two commodities you may or may not often have. Because traveling is an amazing opportunity to get away from the everyday grind and experience the world, you’ll want to make sure you are sufficiently prepared beforehand to take advantage of every second and cent available. In this day and age, it’s easier to find ways to save both time and dollars if you know where to look. Here are a few mobile tech suggestions to consider that can help make the most of your journey:

Your Phone is a Wizard at Saving

It’s true! If you know how to properly use your phone, including apps and websites, you can find affordable ways to travel, including flights, rentals, lodging, excursions and food. When it comes to utilizing your smartphone for these conveniences, here are some things to take advantage of:

  • Finding a bed with apps. Due to the rise of tourism and the travel industry, opportunities to find cheap hotels and rooms have exploded in popularity! There are multiple platforms, such as Owner Direct and hotel apps, that can be used straight from your phone that will save both money and time as you prepare to head to your destination. If you’re more lenient with your preferences, consider sharing accommodations with friends, being flexible as to your timing or couch surfing as other a viable options.  Often times you will find more savings while using your phone, such as in last minute deals, than you will surfing the internet or going to their actual site.
  • Banking on the go. Because funds need to be accessed easily while traveling, mobile banking may be a good choice. These banks are completely online, unlike traditional brick-and-mortar banks, and bring new money-saving aspects to the table. For example, many traditional banks will charge foreign transaction fees, which some mobile banks have done away with. Without those fees, you have access to more of your money while out trying new restaurants, exploring new sites and expanding your worldview. You may also want to include mobile budgeting apps that will further guide you in the right direction when it comes to saving before your trip and proper spending while traveling.
  • Searching for flights from anywhere. There are many flight tracking apps that can help find cheap airfare options to travel from place to place. Many of them will even allow you to set up notification alerts when a flight drops in fare or a new flight appears. This permits you to be anywhere doing whatever you want while your phone works for you. Using these apps instead of manually searching on your laptop keeps Google from tracking how many times you seek out these flights (therefore preventing an increase in prices) and lets others do the work for you.
  • Using apps that are designed to help you enjoy your adventure. In general, companies recognize the travel boom and how most people seek experiences over luxury items. To help people, new sites and apps have been developed to help find the best excursions, cheap parking spots and even affordable places to eat. Many will offer all of these opportunities at the same time, making it easier to build your itinerary in one place. TripIt, Way.com or Kayak are all great travel tools, each providing opportunities to plan most aspects of your trip from one place. There are also other apps, like CityMapper, that could help with the miscellaneous but important aspects of your trip, such as outlining your transportation plan.

By no means is this is not an exhaustive list of apps and technology, however, it’s meant to make the planning process of your trip organized and budget friendly. By saving money using some of these ideas (or others you may find), you will be alleviating the burden of financial stress and allowing yourself to enjoy your time away from work even more.
